Client Overview
The Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPA) is a non-profit company and the officially recognised Industry Representative Body (IRB) for South Africa’s internet sector. Founded in 1996, ISPA has been a driving force in shaping telecommunications policy, protecting consumer rights through mediation and takedown notices, and fostering technical innovation via the INX-ZA internet exchange points.
The Challenge: A “Silent Giant” with an Outdated Presence
To elevate its significant impact on the South African internet industry, ISPA wanted to renew its brand and refine its communications methodology when it engaged DUO Marketing + Communications for a strategic overhaul to address:
- Outdated Visual Identity: ISPA’s logo and visual assets required consistency, and the website needed a UX/UI update that was visually engaging. The reliance on dense, text-heavy content made it difficult for users to navigate or connect emotionally with the brand.
- Communication Bottlenecks: The organisation wanted to communicate its successes and industry-wide impact effectively to ensure messaging was more aligned and key updates reached partners and stakeholders through optimal planning and delivery.
- Obscured Value Proposition: Because much of ISPA’s regulatory and advocacy work benefits the entire internet industry, it was difficult for individual members to see their direct return on investment. They required a clear messaging strategy to align the true impact and benefits.
- Inefficient PR Processes: The volunteer-led PR Working Group required a more defined content strategy, structured review processes, and the necessary media training to effectively position ISPA’s messaging in a modern media landscape.
The DUO Solution: A Comprehensive Strategic Revamp
DUO proposed a phased, outcomes-based approach to modernise ISPA from the inside out, aligning their visual identity and messaging with their status as a leading authority.
1. Strategic Messaging and PR Overhaul
We initiated the project with an in-depth messaging workshop involving ISPA’s board and secretariat. This allowed us to develop a robust Messaging Strategy & PR Playbook that shifted ISPA’s narrative from a mere administrative body to a trusted ally and driving force for a better, more connected South Africa.
- PR Process Restructuring: We facilitated the transition of the ad-hoc PR Working Group into a streamlined Marketing and Communications board committee to tighten governance. We implemented a strict content approval workflow and an expert-driven monthly insight-gathering process.
- Media Training: To empower ISPA’s spokespeople, we conducted professional media training, including role-playing sessions with a top-tier business journalist to refine content, tone, and delivery.
2. Visual Identity Evolution
Our goal was evolution, not revolution, respecting ISPA’s nearly 30-year legacy while bringing it into the modern era.
- Refined Logo & Palette: We retained the foundational “ISPA blue” to symbolise trust and stability, deepening it to a confident navy. Crucially, we introduced a vibrant orange accent to inject warmth, humanity, and innovation into the brand, breaking the monotony of the old corporate colour scheme.
- Modern Typography: We replaced the outdated, narrow letterforms with Raleway, a clean, modern, and approachable typeface that ensures excellent legibility across digital platforms.
- Comprehensive Brand Guidelines: We developed a complete brand identity reference manual, standardising everything from logo usage and typographic hierarchy to dynamic, human-centric imagery and iconography.
3. Website Transformation
We transformed the ISPA website from a dense archive into a modern, dynamic, and user-friendly platform.
- Strategic Navigation: We rebuilt the site architecture around core pillars: Policy & Advocacy, Online Safety, Members and Impact. This allowed diverse audiences – from government regulators to consumers seeking mediation – to easily find relevant content.
- Reframing the Narrative: We updated the UX and copy to focus on benefits. For example, the critical”Take-down Notices” section was reframed positively under “Online Safety”. The membership page was redesigned to explicitly answer “What’s in it for me?”, positioning ISPA as an essential business partner and asset rather than a regulatory checkbox.
- SEO & Data-Driven Design: We executed a foundational SEO strategy to ensure ISPA ranks for critical industry keywords and transitioned the site to a more agile WordPress backend to support ongoing content creation and data-driven impact measurement.
The Results
Through DUO’s strategic intervention, ISPA successfully refreshed its institutional image. The complete visual rebrand established a cohesive, confident, and warm identity that accurately reflects the depth of ISPA’s human capital, industry expertise, and proactive pro-consumer stance.
By overhauling the website and messaging strategy, ISPA now possesses a powerful digital hub that effectively educates policymakers, empowers consumers, and clearly articulates its immense value to current and prospective members. Furthermore, the newly structured Marketing and Communications committee and PR playbook ensure that ISPA is equipped with the defined processes, media training, and a 6-month content calendar necessary to consistently secure high-quality media coverage and maintain its position as the authoritative voice of South Africa’s internet industry.
“As we wrap up the ISPA rebrand, website refresh and communications strategy refresh project, I’d like to express my wholehearted gratitude for all the work the DUO team put into this. It’s added huge value. It has been a pleasure working with a team of professionals who patiently and diligently led the ISPA team through the process. You’re a bunch of rockstars!”
